IN MEMORIAM Wills and Trusts...t's not about the Documents, it's about the Results! Those were the words Richard L "Dick" Ferris used to begin his estate planning law practice of Ferris & Associates, P.C. in November of 1993. He committed himself to providing outstanding, client-centered estate planning & estate administration legal services. Through the years, he assisted thousands of people in achieving peace of mind for themselves and their families. Seeing retirement in his future and a need to continue the estate planning services for his clients, in 2011, Dick merged his practice with the Richmond Law Firm of Carrell Blanton Garrett& Van Horn. As a Senior Partner and Chairman of the Board of Principals, the newly merged firm, Carrell Blanton Ferris & Associates, PLC, expanded its markets, services, and operations beyond Williamsburg and Richmond into Fredericksburg and Virginia Beach. RICHARD L. FERRIS January 18, 1945 to April 25, 2020 Trey T. Parker, Managing Principal of the Williamsburg office states: "Dick was a great lawyer and pioneer in the field of estate planning, but that doesn't begin to describe the greatness of the man. To those fortunate to know him, he will be remembered for his generosity, positivity, willingness and ability to make others better. I can't overstate the impact he has on my personal and professional life. To me, Dick will always be my friend, my teacher, and my hero." Bom on January 18, 1945 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Robert and Bertha Haid Ferris. Dick was a proud graduate of St. Charles Preparatory School in Columbus, Ohio. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, his Juris Doctor degree from Ohio Northern University Law School, and his Masters of Law in taxation from Boston University. He served his country as First Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserves AGC and received an honorable discharge. Dick launched his career in 1972 with the Attomey General's Office in the State of Ohio. Later, he served as General Counsel and Director of the Estate and Business Analysis Department of AETNA for over 20 years. He held a CLU, CHFC, and Masters of Science in Financial Services credentials from the American College. He was known for his willingness to mentor other estate planning attorneys and paraprofessionals, even after his retirement in 2019. Terry Jordan, his Administrative Assistant of 21 years, recalls Dick as a man of integrity who was caring and giving. "He always encouraged families, employees, and friends to make a difference in life! He led by example, working behind the scenes to provide food for the homeless, paying for the meals of active and retired military personnel when he saw them in restaurants, sending monies to colleges to help families pay college costs, and most importantly, just being there when you needed a friend or a listening ear. He was a remarkable man", she condudes. Dick married the late L Joyce Ferris on June 15, 1974, and they were actively involved with St. Bede Catholic Church and Two Rivers Country Club of Govemor's Land in Williamsburg, VA until her passing on June 2, 2014. While participating in the American Singles Golf Association, Dick met Maureen Stiling in 2015 and they were married on January 14, 2017 at St. Brigid of Kildare, Dublin, Ohio. Dick and Maureen called Reynolds Lake Oconee home, where he played golf dally with family and friends. Dick was very active in community affairs and was a member of Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church, as well as a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. On Saturday, April 25th, Dick passed away unexpectedly. Surviving are his wife; Maureen Ferris of Greensboro, GA, two step daughters; one brother, two sisters; one grandson, 25 nieces and nephews, 45 great nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
